Programme Description

The aim of the Foundations for Sector Three programme is to create an innovative and novel programme for new staff members joining third-sector organisations. Ideally those who have joined in the last 18 months.  

 

Programme Content

It is made up of four modules, each of which consists of 2 in-person workshops and 2 online webinars. As learners complete each level of the programme they will earn a digital badge.  Learners will be guided to incorporate the learning in their daily work through practical examples, case studies and research and presentations.   

  

Module 1 

Workshop 1 is called Landscape of the Third Sector. It aims to provide learners with an overview of the characteristics of civil-society organisations. By the end of this module, participants will be able to understand:

 

  • Common terminology   

  • Typical organisational structures   

  • Regulatory context   

  • Scale and diversity of the sector   

  • Support and funding infrastructure available  

 

This is followed by webinar 1: My Organisation Within The Wider Sector. This encourages learners to incorporate the learning from the first workshop into their daily work.  

 

Module 2 

 

Workshop 2 is called Public Policy & Advocacy. Its aim is to give learners an overview of the advocacy role of civil-society organisations. By the end of this module, participants will be able to understand:  

 

  • Terminology associated with policy-making and advocacy  

  • How public policy is developed and implemented   

  • Advocacy campaigns  

  • Regulatory requirements around lobbying  

  

This is followed by Webinar 2: My Organisation’s Big Advocacy Ask. To encourage learners to incorporate the learning from the second workshop into their daily work.  

 

 

Module 3 

Workshop 3 is Professional Skills Necessary to Work in the Third Sector. Its aim is to give learners an overview of the necessary skills to operate in a professional third sector organization. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify management and reporting structures  

  • Basic project and time management skills  

  • Basic report writing skills  

  • Multi-agency working arrangements  

  • Engaging with target groups and vulnerable groups.  

Webinar 3: My Organisation & Approaches to Operations will encourage learners to incorporate the learning from the first workshop into their daily work. 

 

Module 4 

Workshop 4 is Personal Skills Necessary to Work in the Third Sector. Its aim is to give learners an overview of the personal development skills necessary to work in the sector. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:  

  • Interpersonal communication skills  

  • Facilitation and negotiation skills  

  • Presentation skills  

  • Self-care and wellbeing at work  

Webinar 4 is  My Organization’s & Personal Development and will encourage learners to embed the learning from the second workshop into their own daily work.
